From the moment a parent finds out about their baby, mom and dad begin to think about the time they will have with their child. First steps. First words. First day of school. Growing up, moving out. A lifetime passes before their eyes as each day of pregnancy passes. When a mother or father, a grandmother or grandfather, a brother or a sister, have to say goodbye, their future is taken from them. Time is taken from them.
For families who have to say goodbye, each second, each fleeting moment they have in the hospital with their child is the only earthside moment they will have. Providing a cuddle cot to a family allows them to keep the child in the room with them, extending the moments they have with their child and giving the gift of time to a family who has been robbed of time.
Cradled Hearts partnered with two local families to raise $6,543 to purchase a Cuddle Cot (click here to watch this video on your mobile device) for families who have suffered a miscarriage, stillbirth, or early infant loss at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Alabama, in memory of Lyddia Newby and Andie Shannon.
Kara, Adam, Henry, George, and Eleanor Newby are Lyddia's family. They lost Lyddia in October 2014 at almost 39 weeks gestation. Their family was able to participate in the rituals that come along with birth, including photography in the hospital and at home.
We exceeded our original fundraising goal of $3,000 after a local family, the Shannon Family, found out their daughter Andie Virginia Shannon would be born silent. On September 5, 2016, Andie was stillborn, and her family asked for memorials to be made to the Cuddle Cot fundraiser. Through their and their family's and friends' generosity, we were able to quickly order the cot. It is now being placed into use at EAMC, and was officially donated to EAMC on Lyddia's birthday this October 30.
Families who are able to create a welcoming and take time to go through the rituals of birth before starting the rituals of saying good-bye have found the grief process to be less complicated and confusing. In order to have time to experience these things, or even to decide if they want to create these memories, the family must have time -- time to decide, time to explore options, and time with their baby.
A Cuddle Cot, manufactured by Flexmort, is a cooling system that can be placed in a Moses basket, bassinet, or bed that helps to keep baby cool and prolongs the time the family can spend with their child.
Thank you for donating and giving the gift of time to the families of East Alabama who are facing going home from the hospital with empty arms.
